From San Francisco, California …
Cullen Luper is a San Francisco–based violinist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, audio engineer, and is the newest member of the Grammy-nominated Quartet San Francisco, where he performs as second violinist. A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a degree in Technology and Applied Composition, Cullen brings a wide-ranging musical background to the quartet—spanning classical, jazz manouche, early music, Baroque, big band jazz, latin jazz, and traditional folk styles from Celtic to Castilian to Scandinavian.
He has performed internationally and collaborated with renowned artists including Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, Mike Block, Hanneke Cassel, Carlos Núñez, Marcus Shelby, and Altan. At the age of 16, Cullen joined The Hot Club of San Francisco and has since performed at many of the Bay Area’s top jazz venues and festivals.
His original composition Gentle Giants was selected for a climate-themed collaboration with the Finnish string quartet Meta4, and his recent multimedia project with Udit Srivathsan—featuring an original narrative and composed soundtrack—brought together over 60 musicians and was fully mixed in Dolby Atmos by Cullen and Udit. The project premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a live ensemble.
Cullen’s versatility, deep stylistic fluency, and creative voice make him a dynamic contributor to the genre-defying mission of Quartet San Francisco.
